Union Park Capital Portfolio General Manager

Boston, MA
Full Time
Executive
Overview:
Union Park Capital (“UPC”) is a Boston, MA private equity firm focused solely on lower middle-market industrial technology companies. We invest in specialized, niche manufacturers: design, assemble and test businesses that build custom or modified-standard products for demanding applications, often under brand names that are well known in their markets.

These companies win on deep application knowledge and engineering know-how but many have outgrown the processes and systems that got them here. We take a long-term perspective to build value through commercial excellence, process and operational improvements, and product innovation, and we pair that organic growth with an active add-on acquisition strategy. Every platform we own has more acquisitions ahead of it.

UPC is building a pipeline of General Management talent in the United States and Western Europe and is seeking entrepreneurial leaders for positions throughout its portfolio. Our General Managers step into successful, founder-led engineering companies in critical advanced industrial markets where precision, quality and expertise matter most. Reporting to the platform CEO, the General Manager helps set the vision and leads the team to deliver it. As the platform adds businesses, the role may grow into leading multiple sites depending on the candidate and acquisition.

General Managers act with urgency and position their team for success with a sense of ownership for fielding and developing the best talent across engineering, sales, manufacturing operations and supporting functions. They implement tools, systems and processes to nurture high-performing cultures driven by KPIs and data in alignment with the corporate playbook, without losing the know-how that has made the business successful.

Responsibilities:
  • Converts an acquired business into a high-performing, metrics-driven business unit while protecting engineering expertise, product quality, and customer trust.
  • Owns P&L for the business unit, accountable for growth and margin expansion.
  • Develops roadmap for talent with detailed assessment of current team and plan for its organization.
  • Leads integration with the parent company across every part of the business. That may include integration on ERP, CRM, marketing automation, HRIS, AR/AP, tax and reporting. Integration is a journey, not a single cutover. The General Manager owns it, so the platform runs on consolidated, real-time intelligence and KPIs that are trusted and relied upon to manage by and to the numbers.
  • Alongside the parent company, develops performance scorecards for each functional area of the business with leading and lagging indicators of success in operations, sales, engineering, finance, etc.
  • Implements leadership cadence with regular operating rhythm, shop floor presence, skip-level conversations and staff level meetings.
  • Owns revenue and leads the commercial effort alongside the commercial team: meets customers, discusses technical products with their engineers, manages reps and distributors, and brings pipeline and forecasting discipline to sales.
  • Where it doesn’t exist, builds product costing and margin visibility (bills of material, routings, standard costs) so pricing, quoting and investment decisions rest on real margins by job / customer.
  • Develops and implements first documented strategic plan with quarterly priorities and communicates it to staff.
  • Works with HR and leadership to design and implement scalable and attractive compensation plans.

Qualifications:
  • BS in Engineering, Operations Management, Business Administration or related field
  • 10+ years of progressive experience at an industrial manufacturer with preference for manufacturing hardware technologies (instrumentation, mechanical componentry, test & measurement, sensors, industrial automation or a similar niche, specialized manufacturing environment)
  • Strong leadership experience with demonstrated background identifying key talent, building high-performing teams, making hard calls and articulating a compelling vision that inspires performance
  • Comes from, or has built, a professionally run, entrepreneurial, growth-oriented mid-sized business or a decentralized operating unit of a multi-industry company such as ITW; already knows what good structure, process and metrics look like and has put them in place
  • Strong understanding of systems with the ability to produce and synthesize sound, actionable and insightful data across ERP, CRM and other related systems to manage business performance
  • Experienced change agent who brings structure without losing the people, customers or engineering know-how that make the business successful
  • Demonstrated financial acumen with ability to understand levers of a P&L
  • Experience leading operations or sales teams within an industrial manufacturer. Comfortable in front of customers discussing technical products, with experience selling through independent reps, agents or distributors
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude and at home on the shop floor; direct industry experience not required
  • Experience in a private equity-backed business preferred
  • On-site role, every day; not a remote position
This is a pipeline position for evergreen types of roles throughout our portfolio and not indicative of an active opening.

Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor. The law requires us to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We have a goal of having at least 7% of our workers as people with disabilities. The law says we must measure our progress towards this goal. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had one. People can become disabled, so we need to ask this question at least every five years.

Completing this form is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer is confidential. No one who makes hiring decisions will see it. Your decision to complete the form and your answer will not harm you in any way. If you want to learn more about the law or this form, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
